A few winters ago, a friend and I followed the Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt. The experience of walking step by step in slow, rhythmic meditation made me feel like an explorer from a bygone era; the humbling realisation that we were but tiny particles in a vast landscape, at the mercy of whatever nature had to throw at us, was impactful. This journey inspired me to try to capture on film the power of the nature, what it is to be a human within it, and the sense of silence and solitude that you experience in the mountains.
Arriving in the Arlberg mountains in Austria for the first time on an assignment, I was so excited to find an environment of such beauty and rich visual choice. I was inspired to return many times during all seasons and build a collection of photographs that would echo my experience of being there.
I have discovered that much of the Arlberg’s true beauty reveals itself in the summer. Landscape photography is much about being in the right place at the right time and more often than not I have found myself chasing clouds around the White and Green Rings – the winter and summer circular ways through the mountains around Lech and Zurs – to find the best locations. The images chosen for this book follow my journeys around these routes.
Of all the places I’ve visited the Arlberg is, without doubt, one of my favourites. The sense of freedom and exhilaration I experience when I arrive there is immeasurable; there’s no better environment to work in. The villages have managed to retain a traditional charm that is lost in so many resorts and the people are untiringly warm and welcoming.
My photographic quest has always been to capture the essence of a place and to give a sense of being there. I hope I have in some way brought the true beauty of these magical hills to the pages of this book.
